Carma House opens to cancer patients on June 11

May 26, 2009

Calgary, AB – Carma House will officially opens its doors to cancer patients, their families and caregivers on Thursday June 11th 2009. Situated on the banks of the Bow River, minutes from downtown, the new facility will be a permanent home for Wellspring Calgary’s cancer support centre.

“We are very proud of the contribution that we have been able to make,” says Alan Norris, President and CEO of Carma Developers. “Knowing that this will have a significant impact on the lives of people who need it most is very meaningful to our organization.”

Carma Developers designed and built the new facility as well as donated a portion of the cost of the land. Last year, to mark Carma’s 50th Anniversary, more than 300 Carma employees gathered for a house raising ceremony, where the exterior frame of the house was built. This kicked off construction of the house which is now complete.

Wellspring is one of eight community-based centres, mostly located in eastern Canada, which provide a wide range of free supportive care to individuals and families living with cancer. A temporary Calgary centre, which started operating in March 2007, has already provided more than 15,000 hours of free programming, with 110 volunteers giving in excess of 9,000 hours of their time, talent and expertise.

“The grand opening of Carma House marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Wellspring. The new facility will allow us to reach out to more people and to continue providing much needed support to cancer patients and their families,” says Patti Morris, Executive Director of Wellspring Calgary.
